Spelling Practice worksheets is digital printable file that has one page of introduction to spelling rules, 1 page of 5 elementary spelling rules and a total of 23 worksheets.

This is a second grade spelling level.

The Spelling Rules covered are:

Rule 1: With short vowel three letter words, double the

ending consonant before adding -ing or -ed

Rule 2: With words that end with a silent e drop the e

before adding -ing

Rule 3: Words that end with sh, ch, s, ss, or z add -es

instead of -s to make the word plural.

Rule 4: Words that end with a consonant and y, change

the‘y' to an ‘i’ and add -es to make it plural.

Rule 5: If a word has a ‘CK’ sound at the beginning, the

first letter will be a ‘C’ if the vowel following is ‘a’ ‘o’

or ‘u’. The first letter will be a ‘K’ if the vowel following is a ‘e' ‘i’ or ‘y’

The types of worksheets included for each rule are:

1. Follow the rule to spell 18 words correctly
2. Circle the correct spelling of the word and write it on the line provided.
3. Add letters, cross letters out, or change them in some way to have a word spelled correctly
4. Unmix the letters to spell the word correctly

There are 7 pages of worksheets for rule one because one set covers -ing and the other covers -ed.

I made these worksheets because I have a 3rd grade son who is terrible at spelling and I have noticed with my kids that if I hand them a bunch of worksheets each morning to be completed independently before they come for lessons with me, they tend to learn the concepts more solidly. Since he is really struggling with spelling while being an excellent fast reader who is well above grade level, I thought it might help if he has a page of independent spelling practice each day. If this helps, I will continue to make packets of these worksheets.
